"Sustainability means that as a society we are aware of the impact of our actions on the planet, that we take responsibility for these actions at both a personal and corporate level and are transparent in our processes. It requires that we have a vision for our future, educate ourselves to decrease our negative impact on the earth whilst seeking ways to reduce damage to the planet.’’
(Adapted from the definition of sustainability from the SLF Forum, held
at CERES, Melbourne, April 2000)
Humanity has entered a unique period in history. We have brought about a ecological crisis of global proportions which is destroying the planetary life support systems we depend on for survival. The eco-crisis itself is a symptom
of a larger condition related to how we understand the world and our place within it. In order to overcome the challenges facing humanity we need to find ways to behave in harmony with it.
Global Sustainability will be the driving force changing the way we work and
live in the 21st century. Sustainability meets the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Sustainability does not necessarily mean a decrease in quality of life or product. At Bird we believe that it is possible to create beautiful quality products in
a responsible and sustainable way. We are not perfect. We are working on reducing our footprint. We are working towards sustainability.
